When I arrived here yesterday and I saw your school up the hill here in Gdynia I spontaneously thought of the film The man who went up a hill and came down a mountain.

The film tells the story of a small village in Wales, lying at the foot of a hill. One day people from the government come to measure the hill in order to decide whether it is a hill or a mountain. Their first calculation says: it is a hill, it is not high enough to be a mountain. The villagers are so proud of their hill that they drag up rocks and earth to make the hill higher. And you can guess the end of the film: the hill has become a mountain.

This story can be a metaphor for what you do here at school. Day after day you climb up the hill to the school when you come from home, but when you have finished your studies here, you will come down a mountain; a mountain of knowledge, of friendship, of compassion.

When you come down that mountain, try to keep in mind that your task is to do something with what you have learnt up the mountain when you are in the valley of life. That something is not a treasure for yourself only, it should be a treasure for others as well. Father Arrupe called this: being men and women for others.

Another important thing is that you don't come down on your own, but in the company of many people of your age. Try not to forget that you are not only coming down the hill in Gdynia, but also in Jesuit schools in London, in Paris, in Brussels, in Dublin, in Barcelona, in Rome, in Berlin, in Vilnius and in many other places all over Europe.

That is the reason why I am here with you today.

I wish all you the best of luck!

Paul Yperman

President of Jecse (Jesuit European Committee of Secondary Education)
