Pedro Arrupe Formation Center for Educational Leaders
The Arrupe Center, established in 1997 by the Provincial of the North Polish Province of the Society of Jesus, is a non-profit, non-public in-service training institution for teachers. In 1999 we have been recognized by the Polish Ministry of Education as a professional center for teachers formation.. It provides formation for those who serve children: teachers, educational leaders, parents and psychologists. Very important field of Arrupe Center’s activity is supporting school reform in Poland and serving people from other Eastern European countries, creating an educational network among schools. We introduce school principals to the know-how of management, based on reflection and Christian values, and we improve the skills of teachers, parents and people working with disadvantaged teenagers and children at risk. We publish a bulletin for teachers as well as training materials. We want to share our long tradition and new methods we have worked out with others, so that the young men and women educated in Poland were more “a men and women for others”, leaders who are conscious about their role in society, competent and responsive to the needs of others. Since 1998 we trained headmasters and teachers from 13th countries (Poland, Lithuania, Slovenia, Croatia, Malta, Ukraine, Egypt, Moldavia, Belarus, Russia, Albania, Hungary, Italy). Arrupe Center leads teaching skills workshops for teachers and for the leaders of youth groups; offers the teachers and parents meetings concerning the problem of sects, addictions, education to critical perception of the media and Civic Education workshops; conduces formation meetings for those working in orphanages, and rehabilitation centers; trains headmasters of the schools in supervising the teachers and managing the personnel.
One of the crucial activities of the Arrupe Center is training adults who can deal with so called “difficult youth” offering workshops and our library resources. Recently we have transformed our project “Educational Clinic for Drug and Violence Prevention” in the separate institution.
Educational research area of the Arrupe Center is the Jesuit High Scholl in Gdynia. Our trainers have a possibility to exercise their new ideas, methods of teaching and convey projects within the school community.
The Arrupe Center received the Pro Publico Bono Award for the best educational initiative in year 2004.
